Garran Dental in Canberra is the brand new practice of Dr Shweta Goyal. Built by Levitch Design Australia in a healthcare complex in the nation’s capital, the practice is a bold move for the young dentist who arrived in Australia in 2006.
“I studied dentistry in India and initially practised there for two years before I emigrated to Australia,” Dr Goyal said. “I stayed with my Aunt and Uncle in Adelaide to begin with while I finished my Masters, then I moved to Canberra where my sister lived. I met my husband there, got married and then moved to Hobart with my husband’s work. We then moved back to Canberra in 2012.
“I worked as an associate in Queanbeyan when I first returned from Hobart. It was always at the back of my mind to set-up my own practice, but whilst my husband studied to become a Radiologist, we were reluctant in case we ended up having to move elsewhere once he was fully qualified.
“In the end, a great opportunity came up in the Canberra suburb of Garran to open a practice and we finally decided there was no point in waiting any longer.” Dr Goyal was living in Garran when she spotted a leasing sign on a new healthcare complex nearing completion. She subsequently contacted the agent and negotiated to move into a first floor, 110 square metre tenancy.
“Once we had the space, we debated whether to hire someone local with no dental experience to draw up plans and manage the project or to go with a specialist dental fitout company,” Dr Goyal said.
“In the end, we decided it would be too much hard work to oversee the project ourselves, so we went in search of a professional crew.
“We met Lester Arnot from Levitch Design Australia and they were very
professional from the outset.
“Lester was very upfront with all the costs and was open in our discussions and answered all our questions. We reviewed their past projects on their website and they sounded like the right company to go ahead with.”
The plan for the new Garran Dental was to incorporate three treatment rooms, an OPG room, sterilisation area and a separate lab, together with reception and waiting areas. The brief for the overall feel of the practice was to create a warm, yet professional environment that was inviting to all.
Dr Goyal completed Levitch Design Australia’s detailed questionnaire upfront to help brief the specialist surgery design company on her specific requirements.
“By the time we had the first design meeting, Levitch’s designer had already come up with ideas for us to review and we could say what we liked and didn’t like,” Dr Goyal said.
“It helped us visualise the possibilities for the space and was a great way to approach it. That first design meeting helped us clarify everything and the designer was very open and flexible to all our ideas and needs.
“We had no knowledge of how anything should be done in terms of how large the surgeries needed to be and how to design the spaces ergonomically. We benefited from Levitch’s experience and they really did well in terms of how the space works. Their attention to detail is excellent.
“By the second design meeting, we were getting very close to finalising the project. The designer was happy to work with us until we achieved exactly what we wanted. He was very flexible and helpful throughout the process.
“From the beginning, the team at Levitch were open about what could be achieved with the budget we’d set and they then made appropriate suggestions as to how our needs could be accommodated whilst keeping within that budget.
“Once we’d finalised the design, Jim and Matt, the project managers, took care of everything. If an issue arose, they just dealt with it. They would correct anything we were not happy with and correct anything they deemed not up to standard without us asking. They did all the approvals with council, radiation certification, etc and gave us all the documentation at the end. They managed it all really well and we didn’t have to worry about a thing.”
Dr Goyal said Levitch Design Australia also liaised with supply companies to coordinate installation of all the equipment.
“We chose Sirona C4 and C8 chairs, a DAC Premium autoclave, Sirona Orthophos OPG unit and Sirona intraoral x-ray units,” she said. “We looked at other brands but we had heard such great reviews about Sirona products, that we went down that path for all our equipment. We wanted premium quality equipment because we trust its reliability.”
Levitch Design Associates created the perfect practice to meet Dr Goyal’s needs – stylish and elegant yet warm and inviting at the same time.
“Levitch delivered exactly what we wanted, on time, on budget with no issues and no delays,” Dr Goyal said. “They did a great job in designing the practice and then executing that design. They met the brief perfectly.
“The reception and waiting areas look great and the surgeries function well. We’re very happy. It was a very bold project for us and we’re very satisfied with the final result.”
