Flooring in Healthcare Design

Flooring is an important aspect of healthcare design as the type of flooring chosen impacts the outcome of each space.

During the past few years, there has been a shift in the type of flooring chosen for healthcare environments. More neutral materials are being used in healthcare design rather than natural materials like wood and stone. Patterned flooring is being used less frequently with more simple flooring designs being favoured.

The most common flooring options in healthcare design include:

Vinyl Sheet:   Vinyl sheet (PVC) is one of the predominant flooring materials used in healthcare environments. Its popularity is due to its resistance to damage, ease of maintenance and its reasonable price tag.

Vinyl Tile:   Vinyl Tiles are made from a less flexible material than Vinyl Sheet flooring. It’s durability and design flexibility makes it a favoured flooring choice in commercial spaces.  The benefits of Vinyl Tiles include the ability to remove tiles for cleaning and replace the individual tiles when damaged.

Marmoleum:   Marmoleum has been coming back into popularity over recent years due to its environmentally friendly properties and its durability. Made with renewable materials, linoleum is biodegradable and can last up to 40 years with the proper care.

Modular Carpet Tiles:   Reinforced vinyl in modular carpet provides additional stability. The benefits of Carpet Tiles include the ability to remove tiles for cleaning and replace the individual tiles when damaged. This lowers the chance of infection and removes any odours.

Polished Concrete:   Polished concrete provides an aesthetically pleasing flooring choice, all while maintaining its durability. Its smooth surface and moisture resistance helps protect it from any bacterial growth. It also needs little maintenance, making it a hassle-free flooring choice.

Ceramic Tiles:   Ceramic tiling is another popular flooring choice for bathrooms and non-sterile areas due to its durability and ease of maintenance. It comes in a variety of designs, and differs in quality, performance and cost.

When finding the perfect flooring choice for healthcare spaces, the crucial things that have to be considered, include:

  • Cost
  • Durability & wear resistance
  • Infection control
  • Warranty
  • Safety standards (slip & fire rating)
  • Acoustic properties

I engaged Levitch Design Australia for the renovation, rebranding and marketing of my Dental Practice, and from start to finsih I was very impressed with their professionalism. I didn't realise initially that they would be able to oversee all aspects of the project, and having them do this allowed for a seamless integration of the vision across all parties. They were professional, creative, addressed any concern thoroughly and in a timely manner, and were a pleasure to deal with. Since completion, the feedback from patients has been extremely positive, and we have noticed an increase in revenue as a result. I would highly recommend Levitch Design Australia.read more
